A view on politics - by Tottie

Lauding Politicians

November 18th 2006 02:45
One of the things that really peeves me is how "ordinary" people bow and scrape to politicians. Now don't get me wrong, I'd be the first to line up to say that they need to be treated with dignity and respect, but I think organisations and folk go overboard, in an ingratiating sort of way.

It is no suprise that some poltiicians eventuallybelieve their own publicity. And seem to think that they are legends in their own lunchtime. Why else would politicians do what they do? I mean, just look at the papers for the week ending November 17th, 2006, and see what politicians think they can get away with?

A one time premier of Queensland did all sorts of strange things and I have always believe dit was just this very point. He was a "doer" and found it easy to do things himself that go through proper procedures. Only a few poltiicains seem to behave this way, but it is still too many, as people believe that polticiains are infallible. As if they aren't human, and when they do fail, ithere is disbelief. The reality is that pollies are human, with the same frailties as the man or woman in the street. Somehow though they think they won't get caught, or that the good they have been doing for the community somehow negates their wrong doing.

(Incidentally I didn't support the long time premier and his action, but I think I have some understanding of how it came to be.

There is a neat little publication which is aimed at young people - but it is an easy read and probably has as much information as you need for an introduction to the Australian Parliament.

They are available FREE from your local Federal Member of Parliament? Perhaps a phone call, or you could drop in to the office and collect it.

The title is "How the Australian Parliament Works"

The Australian Parliament website is a good place to look for more information www.aph.gov.au

Why do people vote the way they do.

November 15th 2006 05:53
When I was growing up "politics" wasn't discussed. I think I heard my father curse various senior politicians at the time, but I really had no knowledge of it all. When I was old enough to vote I was on my own, and I can recall the first time I voted I had not idea what I was doing.

I soon started to take an interest in it, and several times during my life I joined a liberal group. Somehow I felt at ease there, though I didn't renew my membership on several occasions.

It was later on when our children had left home that we took a greater interest in poltics, my husband and I, and it was in part to meet new people in our new home region.

One year my parents arrived days prior to an election, and we told them that they would have to "entertain" themselves as we were working on a polling booth for the Liberal Party. I was most surprised when my parents eagerly offered their services. It was the first time in my life that I really knew my parent's politics.

It seems that they were very much conservative voters. We often laugh at the enthusiasm my then nearly 80 year old mother showed at her hours on the polling booth extolling the virtues of politicans of which I would have thought she had limited knowledge.

It really was quite hilarious and we have had many discussions since on the topic.

(I might add that I had left home at 18 years of age, and for most of my life had never lived near my parents, so we always had other things to talk about when we met up.)

I wonder whether it was just the way that my sister and I were brought up, that we had a leaning towards convervative politics. She I think has little knowledge or interest, and she's probably a swinging voter, or worse someone who usually don't make a decision and leaves an informal vote.

Some big questions about past pollies.

November 14th 2006 06:23
I've got to be cautious here, as I don't want to get myself into any trouble, but the Queensland Courier Mail has kept many of us amused/bemused and gasping with the news about two former ministers of the Beattie Government. Apparently their activities that are currently being investigated by the CMC and/or the Police.

One has a day in court later this week, and we are all waiting to hear details of the strange behaviour which has been alleged.

Women in Politics

November 13th 2006 05:31
I often lament at the low number of women in politics in Australia. The Australian Labor party has a system whereby the numbers of women preselected is pre-ordained by the Party. Certainly it works well in that many more women have been successful in getting into Parliament in both State and Federal level.

The Australian Liberal Party does not have such a system. Women are supposed to be preselected on their merits. Does that work? Well, perhaps you can guess, that it doesn't all the time. With the Liberal Party being a bit of an "old boys network" there is a perception that it is almost impossible to get in. There certainly have been women as Senators in Queensland, but at present there are no femaile senators, and the likelihood of there being one is quite remote.

Passion in Politics

November 2nd 2006 00:54
People who join political parties are generally VERY PASSIONATE about things. Some are single focused and see that they can made a difference in their area of interest, and others have delusions of grandeur, and others just want to work for the community and do the right thing.

Some of the very passionate folk want to "WIN AT ALL COSTS", and are prepared to break laws, intimiate, and generally make a damned nuisance of themselves as well as rbinging politics into disrepute

Politics - who cares?

September 18th 2006 04:43
Everyone should. Though I know that not everyone will care about politics. For some it is just too hard to understand I like to point out to those who "don't care" that we all have an opportunity in Australia to play a part in the running of our country.

I guess one doesn't have to be a member of a poliical party to gain office - there are "Independents" all over the country but by and large they have little clout. The major parties seem to have control. Sheer weight of numbrs.

Friends in high places

September 14th 2006 09:26
If I was younger when I discovered politics I might have wanted to try to be a candidate in one of the polical parties. One of the conservate Australian parties no doubt.

I actually don't recall knowing anyone who was a politican, and it wasn't until my children had almost finished school that I really came face to face with a politican and had the confidence to tell him what I really thought
