A Venetian Nightmare..Pt 1
We had just spent a wonderful day in Venice, taking an early water taxi out to the romantic city in search of a glimpse of Casanova himself. The streets are narrow and the buildings high so at times you can get easily lost and have to listen to the bells of the Doges Palace and follow the blue line of the sky above to get your bearings. As the sun was setting we took a gondola out on the water, which was choppy from the passing boats. Our Gondalier was a little shy and would not sing, but soon we passed over the main body of water and drifted down a small passage between the buildings where we were too caught up in the beauty of the mossy architecture to care. The bubbles of our champagne tickled our senses and relaxed our bodies as the sky above turned slowly purple. The moon began to rise above the scattered city, its silver light dancing on the ripples of the sea.
Regretably we were soon headed back to the main land, back to reality and back to two serious faces from leaders of the three tour groups. There had been a few complaints from some of the campers from a place where we had stayed in Rome a few days before. Apparently some of the group had been really disruptive after a night out at the local pub. We thought this was another reprimand of such, however no one was prepared for the news that we were met with when the hall had quietened down and the stern and serious voice of the girl at the front spoke.
"I am sorry to inform you that one of our colleagues has passed away. He was on tour with you and was rushed to hospital last night with a mysterious illness." There were a few sharp intakes of breath from people around the room and tongues began to wag in whispers behind hands raised to cover open mouths. "We do not know what it is at this point and we are awaiting news from the hospital." She carried on talking like a robot, her tone level and unchanging.
"I realise this must be difficult, however I feel that you should all have the facts. This virus could be from something he had eaten, something which he drank or someone that he may have come into contact with. We do not know if it is contagious, however if you have not been feeling well today I urge that you speak to your Leader as soon as possible. All further travel has been suspended from here on in, the Italian government has quarantined this camp site and no one from these groups is allowed to leave the grounds. As we speak other campers are being evacuated. As soon as we know what is going on we will inform you. I must tell you that this news is only likely to arrive tomorrow morning. We have been in contact with Doctors from Rome who have said you are advised to wash yourselves thoroughly tonight, please scrub your entire body and be as thorough as possible. We are all in the same boat here so please be assured we will pass on information as it comes to light. Thank you everyone."
