A Street Car named... Sarah

As everyone knows Callum loves cars, he even dreams about them (yes he tells me before he goes to bed and when he gets up about them all!), he does have other loves but cars are top and the utter mostest bestest. So you'll not be surprised to hear that every weekday morning before we head off for playschool that upon asking him what he would like to take for the show and tell table that his answer is... yes wait for it... CARS!!!! If he had his way he'd take his whole big bucketful but alas it's too heavy for him to carry and I flatly refuse to carry it (too heavy for me also. *laugh*) and so we've settled on him not being allowed to take no more than three cars (one for him and one each for his friends Henry and James).

This morning it was the normal ritual of choosing which cars to take. That sorted out and all the other ones put back in their little bucket home (and of course Callum fully dressed!) we head off to playschool. Now here's the other thing about that little monkey monster of mine... every complete stranger you meet in the street will come up and talk to him, we now have a whole little journey to playschool made of saying hello to people who we don't know but who we see each day and who stop and talk to Callum, they all ask about which car he has today and get to look and hold it. It's very cute but also it does make us late on occasions for playschool. *laugh*

So there we are this morning heading off on the morning walk and we get to the end of our alleyway and have to let ourselves out of the gate. On the corner of the pathway is an office building (also with this building the back of it backs onto a shared footpath with our flat so we can see into each others buildings) and one of the employees there is just about to go in and sees us, so she stops and talks to Callum (we've talked to her once or twice before), she's asking Callum where he is off to and does he likes playschool and what he has in his hand. So Callum shows her the car. Then she asks him his name to which he replies Callum Thomas White. I then suggest to Callum he ask what her name is and she tells him, "It's Sarah.". You can hear him give a little gasp and look at me and so I say "Wow she has the same name as me." Callum is mighty impressed. We say our goodbyes and head off to playschool. A little up the road Callum turns round to me and says "That was cool Mummy, she has your name. My cars are all now called Sarah too, all cars everywhere are called Sarah!" he then goes along pointing at all the cars and calling them Sarah. So I ask him if any of the cars are named after Daddy's name Darren to which he looks at me in that way that only children can and says "Nooooooo, only called Sarah! Silly Mummy. No Darren or Callum cars." It was so adorable and after a few weeks of having some rotten moments with Callum telling me he doesn't love me and that I have to pack my bags and leave home... with my fish Toot as well, it was just what I needed. I know he's only young and doesn't fully understand how what he says can upset someone but I was feeling that maybe I'd somehow lost that bond I had with him and was becoming depressed and upset and feeling as though I was a failure as a Mummy. It's silly how having all the cars everywhere named after me made me feel better but I'm not knocking it, I have this wonderful special little boy in my life and maybe I'm not failing as a mother as badly as I thought I was.

No doubt all the cars are called Henry or James now but I had my moment. *smile*

From the mouths of babe's, such validation is a joy.

While living in Surat Thani, Thailand our neighbor's little boy was mischievous and usually prowling the neighborhood naked and hungry; mom was never far behind her charge trying to redress her hungry little streaker. A futile never ending task.

That fella was about three years old, and when naked and soapy, impossible to hang on to. Sometimes mom looked absolutely worn out from the chase, but a hug and kiss from little Mipoo (Teddy Bear) and you could see her batteries instantly recharge. The perks of parenting aren't always obvious, but they are always precious.

The ultimate compliment, Sarah, the car.

Great post,

I'm afraid that little boy of yours has the male gene, in abundance.

Men just love their cars, they'll tell you they understand them better than females, I tend to be with them there. I guess I've got a bit of the male gene too. Geneticists please don't respond, I know there's no such thing in isolation except the sex gene, and maybe that is more complex than we realise, I'm ahead of the bunch, not behind them although they have more knowledge, I have some, and can't wait so long while it takes them to do some more research. My instincts are stronger.

Never thought you'd start the day this way, did you?

I had a great trip to playschool with you and Callum.

Hello Raven.

What a wonderful story/memory and you sum up parenthood perfectly. Being a parent is the most rewarding but hardest job there ever is.

Thank you for popping by.

Take Care.

Hiya Katyzzz.

I know! Which made it even more special.

Glad you liked the post. *smile*

I love your replies, always bring a smile to my face and I'm happy to have your company on the playschool run.

And as for male genes, yep Callum sure is all boy! *laugh* I already get told off by him for not getting my car makes correct.

As always a pleasure to see you.

Take Care.

Hi Sarah,

upon asking him what he would like to take for the show and tell table that his answer is... yes wait for it... CARS!!!!

I was waiting in anticipation for this one.... it was a close call ~LAUGHING~ I love how you word things!

Awww your journey to playschool sounds gorgeous! Do you get lots of old people doing the asking? I love old people! I get to talk to a lot of them during my day and they soooo appreciate these sort of encounters.

Oh my word I can only imagine how heart breaking it is for a parent to have their child tell them that they don`t love them, even when they are only still small. awww hugs to you for that one!

Love hearing of your journeys... that`s sooo cute how he named all the cars after you. He is going to read over these posts one day and have such a good reminder of his little self.... thank you for sharing!

Hi Sarah,

Sorry to hear you weren't feeling to good about being 'a mother'. But I know what you mean when they say nasty things.

Even though we know that they don't really mean it, but in that moment when they have said they feel it. It's a hard thing.

Let all cars from here on in be named Sarah.

Love & stuff
Mrs M

Hiya Ash.

Boy have I been slack in replying to replies, I'm blaming it all on the DIY we've been doing.

Thank you for the compliment, I like to think I have a simple way of saying things.

Oh yes the old people, like you I enjoy talking to them too, so friendly and lots of interesting stories. We occasionally have the odd old lady/gentleman talk to us, the men love to give Callum a pat on the head which at times he isn't too impressed with. Also they all think his name is Thomas as he has a Thomas the Tank engine bag which has the name Thomas written on. I've given up now trying to tell them different. LOL.

Thank you for the hugs, they're very much appreciated. It has been a tough time lately with Callum's new found tactic but I'm trying to ignore it and not let it get to me, I know that deep down he doesn't understand and mean it. And for every time he does say it there are a dozen more times that he shows how much he does love me.

I'm glad you enjoy hearing of our little journeys and I hope that one day when Callum is old enough to read these he'll enjoy them too... plus plenty of embarrassing moments for the girlfriends to hear about. And the thank you goes to all the wonderful members here at Orble who have been kind enough to post on my blog, I've loved reading your comments and more importantly your own blogs.

As always Ash it's a pleasure to have your visit.

Take Care.

Hiya Mrs M.

Thank you. It's been one of the most heartbreaking moments in my life feeling the way I did/do but I'm slowly starting to feel better. I have such wonderful people around me helping me through this and I have a fantastic little boy, who even though is a little monkey monster and says hurtful things I know deep down does love me.

Now to find myself a pink car and have my name written on it.

Take Care.
