A Problem With Video-games: Haters gonna hate

September 17th 2011 15:55

Quick question: Do you have a Facebook account? If you are 80% of the first world than I imagine you do. Follow-up: do you consider yourself a gamer, and if so do you Hate people who play Facebook games?
YOU'RE NOT A GAMER, YOU'RE AN IDIOT!!!!
There seems to be a strange dichotomy with the "gamer" and "casual" crowd. Frankly, I don't understand the brew-ha-ha surrounding this issue. It seems that if you don't spend your life savings on a hobby than you are not allowed to call it a hobby. I would consider myself a gamer, but I don't hate those that only play a few casual games every now and again. The hate seems to stem from two sources: Facebook games, and apps for any devices that has them (iPhone, smart phones, iPods, ect.). This is completely unfounded and just shows how much we need to grow up.
I hate because I hate
I have a Facebook account and I do play games on it. Why shouldn't I? These are free games, people! Granted, like all free games there is a payment option to it as well, but that is not what I am getting at. I didn't get Farmville when it was first popular, in fact, I still don't get it. I don't hate Farmville, I just never got into it. I have some games that, unlike Farmville, you don't have to check at certain times to accomplish tasks. I play a total of three games on Facebook: Words with Friends, Robot Unicorn Attack, and Lucky Train. Hell, maybe I'll review all of these tomorrow now that they are on my mind; because, they are, in fact, games. These games open up a whole new demographic of people to the world of gaming, and they may not go "hardcore," but they now understand it a bit better. Also, connecting with your friends is a big part of gaming (more to come on this later).
It's all about making new friends. "So, do you play Robot Unicorn Attack?
The other thing that seems to put a worm in their pot-pie is the people who play Angry Birds, and Cut the Rope and call themselves "Gamers." Both of the games are very well made and no one should hate them because they were released for $2, moreover, we should be thanking them for being so cheap and fun. Apps do not spell the end of gaming. Repeat that three times in your head and if you still feel that they are, then I guess it's a lost cause. Apps are another way of playing games, and some damn good ones at that too. Have you played Infinity Blade, or I.D.P's Space Deadbeef? These are two amazing games, and either cheap or FREE. They may only be available on certain devices, but they use the format on their advantage and play so well on them that I couldn't imagine them on any other device. Apps may appeal to mostly casual gamers, but there is absolutely no reason why anyone should turn down these games. So long as the quality meets the cost, apps are a great way to play games.
So much to choose from!
Where this all stems from is not the quality or quantity of games that are offered from these venues, but the people who play them. "Casual" is a dirty word to some people out there who feel that it should be exclusive. the mentality behind this is the same as a "Members only" section of a club or bar, where-in you have to pay a membership fee to even have the opportunity to get in. The feeling is that they were in the "Members only" section for a long time and now the price has been dropped to allow anyone who owns a wallet can come in. The people who call themselves "gamers" have spent a large amount of time and money doing their hobby, and to have someone call them self a gamer solely because they play Fruit Ninja seems to be unfair. I am not about to say that the people who play app or other casual games are not gamers, they are. Really, everyone plays games at one point or another. Does that make everyone a "Gamer?' Yes, everyone plays games; therefore, everyone is a gamer. Don't get your horseradish is a knot, everyone is a gamer, but that is a good thing because that means more people are exposed to more games. The more games you are exposed to the more likely something along the line will peak their interest, and they will buy something more hardcore.
This will just shoot you in the foot in the long run.

Nice article. Would you call a person a "footballer" if they only play two games in a season because they feel like it? Or would you call someone a "reader" of books if they only read Harry Potter. I reckon everyone is tied up with the "er" part in gamer and that is fine. What is not fine is the hate. To everyone who hates, I'm giving you the sad face =(
