A Problem With Video-Games: Achievements

Quick, what is your gamerscore/what does your trophy collection look like? Follow up question: Who the hell cares what it looks like? Seriously, what does it change if you have 500 gamerscore, or 50000? Nothing, that's what. Would Super Mario Bros. be any better if you got non-redeemable points after completing each level? Or would Sonic be changed with trophies? It is this generation's equivalent of a world-wide high score chart, which is already pretty meaningless. I sated earlier that these things may become useful or a smart marketing tool later (1, 2, 3), but as of now it is just sort of useless.
This is a genius method of keeping people coming back to your console; the exclusives hook them in and the trophies keep them coming back for more, brilliant! I may seem a little contempt with this topic, and that is because I see no value in these things. I wouldn't base a friendship or even how much time I play a game with someone based upon how many gold trophies they have in Uncharted. I may be being extra harsh, but I am trying to make the point that many people, including myself, have fallen pray to this cheap ploy.
I can see the value in as well though, they can extend the play time of a game to multiple play throughs, so they hold water there. Also, it is a way to tell if a player you are playing with online is experienced or not, so take that for what it is worth. Lastly, it can add a different level of challenge to the game if a person does indeed want to get all of the achievements in a game. Bottom line though: Achievements and trophies are useless and add so little to the game, and gaming as a whole that they would not be missed if they disappeared tomorrow.
