A Picture Paints a Thousand Words

June 5th 2007 10:36
This weekend we visited my in-laws. While there my father-in-law Eric showed us his newest gadget, it was one of those Digital Photo Frames. My FIL loves photography and he's pretty good at catching a good picture. While looking at the photos he'd put on (which were from our trip to Old MacDonald's Farm) I thought about what makes a good photo and the stories you can get from just a simple picture.

Then yesterday while talking on a messageboard a friend posted this photo he'd come across:

Which is absolutely amazing.

After that I was visiting Ash's blog and Katzyzzz's blog (hope you don't mind me linking to your blogs ) who always have the most thought provoking beautiful photos.

Personally I don't think I'm a good photographer although I do love taking photos but every so often I get a photo that I'm happy or proud of (yes mostly of my little monkey monster) and there is just something about the photo that makes me think "yes that has captured something, you did good girl."

If you asked me what I thought makes a good photo/picture I couldn't narrow it down to just one thing. Sometimes a perfect photo is one that is posed for and everything is in focus/perspective etc and you have a lovely smile and so on, others is just a moment caught without a person knowing and you capture a magic moment and then there is the time you witness and manage to capture a beautiful scene, like a sunset. These things amaze me, just from a click of a button you have all this beauty to capture.

I'm thinking that maybe when Callum starts school and we've sold our flat and have some money that I might look into a course in photography as I'd love to learn more about this fine art and be able to take much better photos. For those of you who are keen photographers, or just like taking photos or who enjoy looking at photos/pictures what experience, words of wisdom, thoughts do you have to share?

And because it's all about photos here are some I'd like to share with you.

Man's Best Friend (they walked round the whole place either like this or running off together side by side), to me it captures the meaning behind a child and it's best friend (the dog is my Mum's Red Setter Millie who is as wild as Callum! LOL)

I'm not sure why I like this photo off the yellow flowers, maybe it reminds me of being a child and going for walks here with my parents.

Faster than a speeding Bullet. I love everything about this photo, to me it's all about what childhood should be, having fun and lots of smiling.

Keep on Running
.

I have hundreds more photos that anyone is more than welcome to look at on photobucket and please feel welcome to share some of your favourite photos or any that you have taken yourself.

Take Care.

"Beautiful photo!!!" one of my favorite photo to take is one that catches someone off gaurd, when they think you are just watching what they are doing. snapping away. you just get very beautful, real pictures this way.

Sarah,

Sensational opening shot.

Your own - really well done, I think the yellow one is canola flowers {oil, margarine, cholesterol lowering}

Your photobucket is really well done.

As regards the course, maybe, it's hard to earn a living as a photographer. Spend your money sparingly.

Modern cameras make everything so easy, read photography magazines, look and learn and experiment for composition.

Odd angles, up views, side views, down views, unusual juxtapositions, rule of 3 etc.

Analyse which photos don't do anything for you as well as what do.

You've all the right ideas, fell in love with the dog but that does not detract from all the others, especially Callum, and your naming of them.

Just keep on keeping on, you're going just great.

Great way for the family to share things. And memories, irreplaceable.

Hiya Tammy.

It is an amazing photo isn't it. I should ask where he got it from really so I can properly link.

Off guard photos are some of my favourite, capturing that special moment. I could probably quite happily sit in a public place somewhere and snap away at people lost in their little worlds.

Take Care.

Hiya Katie.

Wow lots of advice, thank you.

I'm not really thinking about doing a course so as to earn a living, it's more to try and understand how to take a better photo and so not end up with the hundreds of useless ones I do. I've always from a young age loved looking through photos and have always thought of them as a special way of sharing something with others. I'd love to be able to understand a lot of the jargon used in photography. I think I'll take the advice you gave of magazines and see which ones are around.

Thank you for the kind comments about my photos and my album, there are a few very fond ones I have there.

Again thank you for all the advice and kind words.

Take Care.
