A Little Girl and Her Notebook: I Nearly Forgot
December 30th 2006 02:08
A little girl, named Tammy, about five years old, jumps down from the chair with a thump onto the green linoleum kitchen floor. Her blonde hair flies out behind her as she lands. She giggles.
That is always the best part! The landing.
With a series of grunts and tugs and pushes, she puts the chair back where she found it at the kitchen table. She is careful not to bend her precious notebook that she has spent the better part of the past half hour trying to retrieve from the top of the refridgerator.
Her rosy cheeks set off the deep green of her eyes. The little blue jean jumper she had on would be dirty within five minutes. She wasn't supposed to wear it outside...but she got dressed before she spied the notebook on top of the fridge.
She wasn't supposed to have the notebook, yet. It was a treat. For later. But it was a NEW one. It had a black cover that was so shiny she could almost see herself in it. It was hers anyway.
That's all it took...
she ran towards the back door before her mommy could see her. Tammy had dressed herself that day...her mommy didn't even have to tie her shoes. But she was only allowed to wear that outfit to 'special places.' Her mommy said so.
It was early and her mommy was still in the bathroom putting stuff on her face. It made her pretty or something.
She got all the way to the door and heard, "Tammy...where are you going?"
" 'side." Tammy answered.
"What are you wearing?"
"shorts and tennyboppers." Tennyboppers was the correct name for tennis shoes to the five year old.
"What are you going to do today?" Her mommy's voice was muffled...the way it sounds when she is putting on the lipstick.
"Writin' a book."
"Okay. Stay in the front yard! I'll be out in a minute."
Tammy ran out the door and jumped on the porchswing. It was her favorite place.
She could hear Robert chirping. Robert was the Cardinal that always came back to their yard.
Her daddy had just mowed the lawn.
It was her absolute favorite place to be. Outside...with a new notebook.
Tammy pulled a pen out of her pocket and wrote a story about Robert...
...until her mother made her come back in and change her clothes.

What a lovely thing to say, dedicated to me and Lauren, how thrilled and humbled I was to see that.
The little girl became me just for a moment or two, you pictured childhood so beautifully, how I envy your blonde hair. Hair was never my strong point, nowadays I just accept myself as I am.
I loved my swing, I used to like to sing on it. I always wanted to dance, not that I knew too much about dancing in those days.
My first introduction to it was a child's performance at school. I fell in love with Ballet right there and then. The dreams and fantasies of childhood.
One thing about writing that makes it special is that one can do it until life's end. So you'll carry your love throughout your entire life span.
It was great to see the child. I do love children. They are such special little creatures.

It was great and humbling to be reminded why I am here. Why I write. It, that reminder, your kindness and words are the reason I decided to stay at Orble. Even more so, it was the reason I remembered this child...the one thrilled to write, even if no one ever read a word. She was still an author. A writer. Thanks always for that.
Tell me, did you ever take up dance?
