A draw will be enough for Victory
February 14th 2010 01:59
The Melbourne Victory only require a draw in today's final round clash against Sydney FC at the Sydney Football Stadium. The injury plagued Victory are currently 2 points clear on rivals Sydney, and will not finish any lower then second after Gold Coast United finished their season second on the table following a 2-1 victory over Brisbane Roar last night.
Gold Coast were the best of the new sides this season finishing 3rd on the ladder, with the North Queensland Fury finishing 7th this season, avoiding the wooden spoon which went to last year's Grand Finalists, and Asian Cup finalists Adelaide United after a miserable season only winning 7 games this season, and gaining 8 draws as well.
The Melboourne Victory are still without striker Archie Thompson, and after last week they are missing Matthew Kemp who did damage to his knee and will possibly not play another game for the season. Melbourne will hope to have Thompson back before the Grand Final after already missing 1 game, he will miss today's and has two more games on the sidelines before his return to the side.
Sydney FC look to prevent a double by the Melbourne Victory today with Corica playing in his last season. Steve Corica is the oldest man in the A-League and will be departing the league this season, with the hopes of claiming a premiership with Sydney FC. Melbourne finished top and champions last season, they want to do the double again this season, beating the Sky Blues will certainly assist this at least as far as the minor premiership goes.
Melbourne's defense will be tested with John Aloisi who won the hearts of his team last week with a late winner against Perth Glory last weekend at Parramatta Stadium. Aloisi has likely won over the fans by snatching a victory out of that game as Perth looked like taking away the points at first, but then almost drawing the game, but Aloisi's goal was the one that ended their chances. The Victory will hope their injury replacement for Billy Celeski, Nik Mrdja will fire for them, Robbie Kruse is still battling an injury that he acquired against Gold Coast United in a very heated spiteful clash that saw Steve Pantelidis given 5 weeks, and Muscat also given 2 weeks .
The game starts at 5pm local Sydney time, these two sides are both a premiership favourite this season, with Gold Coast United being an outside chance. Miron Bleiberg will hope to have a successful first up finals, he had made the claim that his side were not going to be beaten this season, which has come back to haunt him as soon as the team lost.
Wellington Phoenix are playing their first finals this season, and Perth Glory are back in the finals after some time away from the finals. Today's game should be a memerable affair for the the A-League, the Victory will hope this is memerable for the right reasons with either a win or a draw to see them take the minor premiership and head into the finals on top.
