A Clockwork Orange

February 23rd 2009 16:08
It's a given that your in for a good couple of hours when u see the name Stanley Kubrick appear on your television, but unlike his other classic works, (The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, 2001: A Space Odyssey this one stands out. If you can get past the fascinating dialect used, and the grundy undies Alex and his droog's wear, you are guaranteed to be stimulated visually and intellectually.

Although this movie is known as a sci-fi classic, this writers personal opinion is that this film extends far beyond any genre you could give it with many styles used throughout the film, from the obvious, to old hollywood cinema, art house, etc. And this works! There is no way this film could stick to one genre, with its complex storyline, it needs all the genres Kubrick could muster.

To define the story in its simplest form, its of a teenager called Alex who likes to get up to some mischief with his friends. When he takes it a step too far with a crazy cat lady and her giant penis (you know what i am talking about if you have seen it), he is sent to prison for murder. This is just the beginning, as he tries to cope with life in prison he sees an opportunity to get out of prison which involves a scientific experiment which is extremely controversial and asks many questions of society and its moral and ethical codes.

Is it morally acceptable to let a person not control his actions? Is the prison system acceptable? Can someone truly reform into civilian society after being in prison? How would you feel if you could not touch a person of the opposite sex, or show sexual feelings for any person? What would happen if you could not defend yourself?

These are just a few of the questions Kubrick asks of viewers of this film and either way you answer these questions, and whatever questions you want answered, this film is sure to impress. It's a film for anyone who wants to be intellectually stimulated, a film for a person that wants to ask questions of societies morals. Simply it is a film for a person that might just want to see a bit of the ol' ultra violence, and some of the in out. And heck, if a film was banned from many countries for so long, it has to be good!
