A Butterfly Flapped its Wings and Sydney Gets Covered in Red Dust

September 23rd 2009 20:18
I am sure pretty much every Australian is aware of the craziness known as today September 23rd 2009. Somewhere in bloody China a butterlfy flapped it's wings and then all hell breaks loose in Australia. Melbourne gets not one but two earthquakes, the South West of NSW and Broken HIll scores the biggest windstorm in recorded history and I wake up thinking armegeddon has begun.

Waking up groggy I notice that it is strange for it to be light at 5.30am so look out the window and nearly fall over because everything is on bloody fire!! Panicking I grab my camera and run outside in pj's and bare feet. Inhaling deeply I discover that I can't smell smoke and if the whole of the Northern Beaches is on fire why has no one woken me with a phone call regardless of the time?

After choking on my deep, smoke searching inhales I return inside after snapping off a few shots and turn on the TV to find that Sydney has scored the tail end of that massive windstorn which has picked up every piece of known red dust from drought effected areas and thrown it on top of us.

Enter the Twilight Zone people, or as Evan from worked described it - we are now in Total Recall. How weird was that?

Believe it or not - you should see Manly Beach at the end of that street!

It should be noted this has caused havoc for asthma sufferers and people with bronchial issues. My mum was locked in her house all day and she is 6hrs down the Sth Coast. It is also the worst recorded pollution levels EVER in Sydney. The governments Air Quality Index (click HERE) states that AQI's over 200 are dangerous - I REPEAT 200 (that is a 2 with 2 zeros after it), well today, if in the Lower Hunter area and Newcastle you got the joy of registering an average AQI of 4475!!!! So it is time to don the Sars mask and save those lungs!!!

I have attached pictures all taken by myself and these have NOT been altered in anyway besides resizing for the possibility of fitting on this web page. There is one picture I have blacked out number plates in. All shot with a Fuji 12.6mp dig camera in RAW format.

Gosh, it looks like the end of the world to me, Jason! Honestly, I'm going to as shocked as you did, if I found myself woke up in this kiosk situation!

PS: For those who having asthma or respiratory system related diseases, it's better to wear a mask to cover your nose from inhaling those storm dust...

Jason the photos are unbelieveable. If one didn't see for themselves you would think you were on Mars not Earth.
We didn't have that orange glow at all. I woke the previous morning to a sea mist dawn only to realise that it was fine sugary dust particles. Then the wind came. And did it come with a vengence. Clocked over a 100k's and hour - sending sharp pain thru the ears. After a stormy night that dumped 22 and a half mils of much needed RAIN. Yesterday morning 5.30 am - beautiful. K

Don't blame a Chinese butterfly! This is part of the planet's demise. I'm pretty sure that butterfly hasn't been driving a V8 or deforesting farmlands.

Thanks Ma - glad you got some rain - about time!!

Celebrity Best - sorry to hear it. I don't suffer any bronchial issues but coughed up red crap last night and had a sore throat most of the afternoon. Hope u feel better!

Jeannine - thanks for you positive comment
I am not blaming any animal or country - A butterfly flapping it's wings in China is a reference to Chaos theory - which explains how one action completely unrelated can have consequences on something on the other side of the world. For your benefit the butterlfy could be a metaphor for a V8. Keep smiling.

Thanks for reading and your comments people - have a good one

Thank Morgan - I was just lucky I woke up 20mins early and camera was charged and sitting on the kitchen bench otherwise I may not have thought of it
So freaky - I cannot believe you slept through most of it.

Jason, I was using "hyumor"!
I was aware it was a reference to chaos theory. I believe, however, that there was more cause and effect behind Wednesday, and behind most things, than (in my albeit basic understanding of) the theory suggests.
Keep emoticoning!

Jeannine - thankgod - I thought you were an obsessed greenie that was going to hunt me down and murder me for suggesting a butterfly was repsonsible
