9 Year Old Rape Victim Terminates Twins.

March 5th 2009 09:02
I read this in the paper today and was heartsick. I cannot believe that a lawyer from a church of any faith could have the right to argue in court over something like this. If abortion is illegal in a country - as it is in Brazil - it should be up to a doctor and a judge to decide. What kind of monsters would expect a tiny little child to risk death to carry to term even one baby let alone two? How on earth could anyone say the unborn babies had more rights than the poor little live baby (which she pretty much is) and put her life at risk. This is not a religious decision, it is a medical decision.

I hope the stepfather's genitalia rots off and I certainly hope he is jailed and subjected to the horrors that he has put this poor little girl through. I can't even imagine the physical damage that would have been caused to her by being penetrated by an adult male let alone her poor little body trying to grow these babies inside of her.

I think this poor little girl has been victim enough. I hope she can heal her ravaged body and what must be a very tormented psyche.

If you do not agree with the decision to put the 9 year old victim first in all of this then I say, "where is your compassion?".

A NINE-YEAR-OLD girl who was carrying twins, allegedly after being raped by her stepfather, underwent an abortion today despite complaints from Brazil's Roman Catholic church.

Police said the stepfather has been jailed since last week, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

Abortion is illegal in Brazil, but judges can make exceptions if the mother's life is in danger or the fetus has no chance of survival.

Fatima Maia, director of the public university hospital where the abortion was performed, said the 15-week-old pregnancy posed a serious risk to the 36-kilogram girl, AP reported.

"She is very small. Her uterus doesn't have the ability to hold one, let alone two children," Ms Maia told the Jornal do Brasil newspaper.

But Marcio Miranda, a lawyer for the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife in northeastern Brazil, said the girl should have carried the twins to term and had a cesarean section, AP reported.

I don't either. It just makes me sad to think these things happen to children. The man should be strung up.

OK, so I can understand the outrage at her being raped. I can understand the hatred of her stepather. What I can't understand is the lack of worldwide outrage that such a response from a supposedly humane, organised religion should have garnered.

I mean, the step-dad's obviously sick (and yes, I hope he lives a long time... in a LOT of constant pain). But the church? If you'll excuse the unintentional pun, all I can say is "Ye Gods...". If I were a Roman Catholic, that one decision would make me change religion, instantly.

This is another example of the church being out of step with what is going on in the world.

I agree with everything everyone has already said.

Apart from the medical complications, can you just imagine the emotional and psychological effect that carrying the pregnancy would have had?

Following the abortion, the Church in Brazil claimed that the doctors had just performed two murder. They said the girl should have carried the pregnancy to term and then had a ceasarian.

The mind boggles.

And yet there are those who think a caesarian section is unnatural.

Haha Norm. My thoughts exactly.

I'm sure you have all heard by now that the Church has excommunicated the girl's mother as well as the doctors involved.

No move yet to excommunicate the stepfather.

To ask a little girl to risk her life because of what's been done to her is obscene... I wonder what the Catholic church will suggest next - that we condone of rape and sexual abuse?? If the church had any sense at all it would ask for God's guidance instead of assuming that they have right over another person's life. If this little girl has to go through something like this in the first place, the very least that society can do for her is to take heart in the fact that they can ease the consequences. What does the Catholic church think it's doing for society. Who on earth could it possibly be helping with such comments?? Not only is it out of step with society, it is cruel and unjustified!!

This made me want to throw up. After just reading Ruby's comment I was in disbelief and looked it up but sure enough here it is:

"God's law is above any human law. So when a human law ... is contrary to God's law, this human law has no value," Cardoso told the news television network Globo.

"The adults who approved, who carried out this abortion, will be excommunicated," said the archbishop for the Recife region.

Officials said she told them she had suffered sexual abuse by her stepfather since the age of six.

Police said the 23-year-old stepfather also allegedly sexually abused the girl's physically handicapped 14-year-old sister.

He was arrested a week ago and is being kept in protective custody. If convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison.

And where are the excommunication orders for the bastard who perpetrated these acts? As for the comments God's law is above human law...some of us don't believe in God so we follow human law. I would think the church would follow the law of sheer humanity. I'm sure if Jesus were alive today he would be appalled.

I'm sure the majority of Catholics would be be appalled by the church's treatment of this girl and her family. Johnny I know you were raised catholic and I can see you are outraged...as should anyone be with a shred of human kindness.

Thanks to all for your comments. I'm glad to see that everyone seems equally outraged by this. I was wondering if anyone would have the audacity to step forward and say the church was right.

As a Catholic (well at least I brought up that way), I am deeply ashamed of the stance of the church.

I had no idea this man raped the girl's disabled sister as well, yet he faces only up to 15 years. these poor little kids have a lifetime of sorrow ahead.

I am not a big fan of religions in general. I have my own spiritual beliefs but they don’t all fit in one religion. Mainly because I think sacrifices, suffering and self-deprivation shouldn’t be regarded as a good thing, so that excludes a lot of them.
I deplore fanatics of any kind but I had a privileged education that most of my fellow
Brazilians don’t have access to.
I feel sorry to read this because it happens a lot. One of the biggest problems of the poorest in Brazil is due to the culture of having a lot of children when you don’t have even enough to feed yourself. You see these families with a lot of children and no structure for even one.
Until a few years ago the country was 90% catholic, now its mostly Christian yet and Catholicism is still important and the majority of the people continue to call themselves Catholics... and this is the religion that incentive the procreation, don’t approve the use of condoms and would risk the life of a 9 years old (AND THE TWINS, lets not forget that even if she carried the kids to the full term all 3 could have died anyway) for the sake of disapproving an abortion. I’m saying this shows a problem that runs deep in the social problems of my Brazil, in a lot of poverty stricken areas the church is the only link people have to social aid...
Gosh it makes my heart so sad.

Is it time for Catholics around the world to rise up against their leaders? A religion led by men only, people who will never carry a child themselves, men who are not supposed to have sex, men who is distressingly high numbers often abuse children and seem to get away with it too, too often.
It's time for change - God would not be amused at the crazy, sick carry on of the Catholic church as it is now.

It's time for change!

Raping children in evil, those who condone it are evil, those who further punish those who've been raped are evil. The Catholic Church is evil!

There's a movie in which a girl tricks a pedophile, drugs him, and castrates him.

I would love to castrate the stepfather-and perhaps the archbishop, who clearly doesn't have enough human kindness in him to have a family... or real friends.

This is disgusting. Not only is she young, she is most likely small and two babies could easily kill her. Even if she did survive she would be in an even worse position than the one she is now-which is awful.

I think that there should be a more wide scale questioning of the church. Roman Catholicism is clearly out of touch with reality and merely a way of supporting human cruelty and especially cruelty to women and apparently children as well.

Sympathy should also be felt for the twins - 4 months along - who were killed.

Not stating an opinion. Only a fact that two lives were terminated.

An abortion at 9 years of age will also bring about long term physical and mental anguish.

The whole thing is f_ucked. A special place in hell will be waiting for her step-father.

Anonymous, but it's still an opinion, I'm with Ruby on this one.
I'll state an opinion, this 9 year old child has had her life damaged by men, and deserves only our love and best wishes for her future. Another precious gem damaged by men.
That's my opinion, and I'm proud of myself for saying it.
I only hope the damage will be mended.

There are just no words that can properly put this atrocity into perspective. Regardless of any decision that was made in the best (or worst) interest of this poor child she will suffer the effects of abuse and of the pain she will face knowing she ended the lives of two precious babies. That's how it will be presented to her. She will feel diminished and unworthy. Even though the fault and blame lie solely with the StepFather and the church, she will be the one who is broken. Her life will always be scarred by these agregious acts of indecency and inhumanity.

i said this already on Norms post, but im still amazed that a case like this would be made public and reported widely in the media with such detail

i think, along with her health, this girl should have had her privacy respected and made a priority, as it is essentially a medical procedure and a sexual assault

There is no excommunication order necessary in the case of the rapist. He had committed at least two mortal sins by so much as even looking at the girl wrong, and has cut himself off from full Communion with the Church. He has already excommunicated himself.

I think this is a case of the Catholic Church refusing to budge from a black and white position. (And the Catholic Church isn't the only church that does it. Many people and denominations in the worldwide church are exactly the same.) The black and white rule is that abortion is wrong - and so they cannot back down from that or alter it in any way or for any circumstance. I can see their thinking - even though I don't agree - if they make an exception in this case, then when will the exceptions stop.

I think this is a problem with black and white arguments on both side of the abortion debate. I don't agree that we should say abortion is wrong in any situation - no matter how tragic. However, I also don't like arguments that say a woman has the right to terminate her baby in every situation. I think there needs to be a lot more willingness on both sides of the argument to look at the grey bits in between.

There are so many shades of grey, I don't see how people can so easily say X is bad, Y is good. End of story.

You have to look at things like, Who benefits from this, Who is hurt by this, Does this lead to greater good for all, Does it lead to bad things for some, how many, will the disenfranchised lose even more, will the rich be richer.

There are so many questions, there can never really be one, only one answer. Except where there are basic things which are wrong. Raping a child is right up there as being the most basic wrong.

I am so happy to see that everyone who posted on here feels the same way I do about the catholic church. I cant believe they the catholic church even hired a lawyer to take on this case. What a waste of peoples tithings. I am very appalled that the rapist is not exiled. Jesus sure has been thrown out of the catholic church.
