24/7 Is Bigger Than Pi

January 21st 2012 21:09
Math

No, really, it is. I did the math to find this out because, after all, the forward slash symbol is how the Internet tells us we want to do division.

If people meant "24 hours a day, 7 days a week," they'd write it that way, wouldn't they?

So 24/7 is 24 divided by 7, which is

428571...

I think it goes on forever, but I ran out of pencils. Also, I finally noticed that it was repeating itself and I figured it would just keep doing that anyway.

Pi, on the other hand, is

This number pi really goes on and on forever without repeating. The other day, I read where some guy actually computed pi to five trillion (yes, trillion) digits. He must have had a whole lot of pencils! Anyhow, he couldn't find that it ever started repeating itself like the number above.

Some people have way too much time on their hands.

Anyway, you can easily see that 24/7 = 3.42 something
and pi = 3.14 something,

which proves the hypothesis that 24/7 is bigger than pi.

I think in math, they call this a formal proof. Or a corollary. Or something.

So all those convenience stores and all those customer service and help lines that are open "24/7" must mean they're open

of something. Right? Because if they meant they were open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, they'd just come out and say it, wouldn't they?

Well, wouldn't they?

I'd make a joke here about pi and pie, but everybody knows by now that pi isn't pie and has told all the possible jokes about mixing them up that there can be:

"Pi r square?"
"No you dummy! Everybody knows pie r round. Cake r square."

...And so on.
