2008 NLCS Preview: Dodgers vs. Phillies
The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies will meet for their fourth time in their team histories. The Dodgers hold the all-time NLCS lead at 3-1 having won it against the Phillies in 1977 and 78, the Phillies beat the Dodgers in 1983.
These teams each meet for a four game series this year and the home team swept all four games at each park. THe Dodgers need their pitching to show up and for their hitters aropund Manny to be productive so they can't pitch around him. The Phillies must have Ryan Howard and Chase Utley power the team, otherwise they are in danger of not being able to put up the runs that they need to win.
X-Factor
Phillies: Brett Myers
He can be erratic at times, but since he was sent down to the minors in July, Myers has been absolutely lights out. He won his start against the Brewers with no runs allowed and he can change the series for the Phillies following Cole Hamels and giving the Phils a great one-two pitching punch to go with their potent offense.
Dodgers: Rafael Furcal
He was out for 122 games this year and at times the Dodgers offense sorely missed this super speedy table setter. Not only does he give the Dodgers a base-stealing ability but also a knack to get on base to set the table for the line-up, he changes their defense with incredible range and a cannon at shortstop. If he can get on base and cause trouble on the base paths, that makes the middle of the Dodgers oreder that much more dangerous.
Prediction
Dodgers beat the Phillies in 6, 4-2. The Phillies offense plays well, but the Dodgers have the intangibles of Manny's hot bat and swagger and the mystique and magic of Joe Torre is too much for the team from Philadelphia.
