20 Things I Learned in 2008

1. There’s no place like home.
2. Especially when I’m surrounded by the love of family and friends.
3. Having principles can be costly.
4. In order to get anything meaningful out of your life, you have to be ruthless about what and who you let into it.
5. Don’t try to manage anyone else’s expectations until you’ve got a firm grip on your own.
6. There is one thing you can never have too much of, and that is music.
7. And love…and sex…and soul food…and family…and friends.
8. Random acts of kindness happen far more often than you have your eyes open to see them.
9. When in doubt, engage in a little manual labor.
10. Laying your own floors and restoring an old car can be totally satisfying.
11. You cannot go longer than eight weeks between hair coloring appointments if you want to continue to pass for 40(ish).
12. Fear changes everything for the worse.
13. When in doubt, throw shit out.
14. A good bra is like money in the bank.
15. Only it’s not, because good bras are REALLY expensive.
16. I am a starter, AND a finisher. It is the in between that drives me nuts!
17. TiVo kicks ass.
18. So does The Cure live.
19. Ditto Ray La Montagne
20. And traveling with friends.
